COMMUNITY PROGRAMS
EDUCATION
“We cannot always build the future for our youth, but we can build our youth for the future.”
- Franklin Delano Roosevelt
Little Free Libraries
We stock the Little Free Library locations at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center, Franklin Cooperative Ministry, and the College Drive Park. Book donations are always welcome in the boxes or at our office!
Literacy & Diversity Kits
We have distributed over 100 Literacy & Diversity kits to local students. in our community. The kits are donated by Safco Products and include books, crafts, and activities promoting literacy and diversity.
School Supplies
We donate school supplies to students at several local Back to School events and community booths throughout the year. Donations include items like pencil cases, glue sticks, pencils, paper, and notebooks.
Book Donations
Promoting literacy is important to our United Way. Each year, we give away free books at community events and through our partner agencies like the Foodbank of Southeast Virginia and the Eastern Shore.
HEALTH
Nutrition Programs
Eating healthy is important for people of all ages, but it can be especially challenging for students, seniors, and those who may not have access to healthy food options. We provide programs that teach simple, nutritious recipes and encourage healthy eating habits.
Healthy Snack Kits
We love to give out these healthy snack kits at community events. They are a great alternative to chips, cookies and other less healthier alternatives.
Wellness Programs
We take elements of our School Wellness Program "on the road" to educate others about the importance of wellness to our overall health and healing. Topics cover mental, environmental, spiritual, physical, social, financial, intellectual, and occupational wellness.
Free Health Items
Since 2020, we have distributed over 1,000 free Covid-19 test kits, bottles of hand sanitizer, face masks, and cleaning wipes throughout the community.
FINANCIAL STABILITY
“A big part of financial freedom is having your heart and mind free from worry about the what-ifs of life.”
- Suze Orman
Financial Reality Fair
At our annual student Financial Reality Fair, students are assigned careers, income, and family sizes before visiting our volunteer tables to choose options for housing, car payments, childcare, and other expenses. The goal is to make smart choices and have enough money left for savings and emergency expenses.
Resource Fairs
Community resource fairs are a great way to help ease financial burdens. for families. Working together with local organizations and businesses, we are able to provide community members access to the resources they need to improve their financial well-being and to access food, medical services, and assistance wih applying for benefits.
